Types of Automated Blinds

Motorised roller blinds are a sleek and popular choice for those seeking a minimalist aesthetic. They operate through a quiet, motorised mechanism that can raise or lower the blind at the touch of a button. Users can typically control them via a remote, a smartphone app, or through voice commands when integrated with a smart home system.

Smart Roman blinds combine the classic look of traditional Roman blinds with the latest in home automation technology. They can be programmed to open and close at set times and are often compatible with various smart home platforms, allowing for scene setting and sun-tracking capabilities.

Automated Blackout Blinds are a great window covering option for shift works, nurseries and media rooms. Blackout blinds can completely block out the amount of sunlight entering your room, providing complete darkness and increased privacy, all via a remote or app on your phone.

FAQ

Most frequent questions and answers on automated blinds
Smart blinds seamlessly blend with home automation systems, allowing for convenient control through apps or voice commands. For instance, Google Home and Amazon Alexa enable your roller blind to be voice controlled or operated via a smartphone app on your phone.

Additionally, advancements in motor technology, demonstrated by the Somfy Home Automation system have led to quieter operation, enhancing the user experience. Homeowners can leverage various communication protocols, such as Z-Wave, Zigbee, or Wi-Fi, to synchronise their blinds with other smart devices.

For example, they can connect with:
  • Light sensors: Automating blinds to adjust according to the sunlight intensity.
  • Thermostats: Controlling room temperature by opening or closing based on pre-set conditions.
  • Voice assistants: Enabling voice-activated control through devices like Amazon Alexa or Google Home.

A motorised blind offers increased convenience, improved energy efficiency, and enhanced safety, with no need for cords or chains. Their automated nature allows for preset schedules, which contribute to better home security and privacy management.

If building from scratch we would recommend going for the 240v option, they can be included in home automation systems and seamlessly integrated into the fabric of the building.

The motor for all types of automation sit within the tube of the blind.  If you have already built and don’t want the bother of an electrician than we recommend rechargeable battery powered blinds.

As functional as 240v but requires recharging 2-3 times a year. This simply done with the charger provided.
Both types of motors are controlled by a remote controller.

Existing blinds can often be retrofitted with automation kits. The process typically involves the installation of a motor and a control unit, which should be compatible with the existing blinds' dimensions and fabric type.

For automated blinds the minimum width can be as small as 450mm if using battery pack motor. Maximum width is 3000mm as limited by availability of fabric.
